Don't be deceived by the 35-minute ferry ride from Auckland CBD: whilst Waiheke is very accessible, the pace of life is slower and more relaxed. You don't even need to contend with traffic to get here. Instead, you can sip on a glass of bubbles on the ferry and enjoy the views of Hauraki Gulf islands as they speed past you.
You'll notice Waiheke Island's chilled holiday vibe as soon as the ferry pulls into Matiatia Bay: you'll see moored boats bobbing around, ready for an adventure. Matiatia Bay itself is framed by rolling green hills. You may even notice a sculpture or two on the hillside, in the grounds of a luxurious, architectural home. You'll know then that Waiheke is a rather exceptional, special place.
Just up the hill from Matiatia Bay is the bustling village of Oneroa, complete with shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries , as well as the island's most popular beach.
Beyond Oneroa, the rest of the island awaits your discovery. Vast white sand beaches are fringed with pohutukawa trees. Wineries and restaurants nestle in green, vine-clad valleys.
Whether you want to surround yourself in luxury; dine on the finest food; celebrate a special occasion with loved ones; relax on a deck with stunning sea views; sip on the finest island-produced wine; visit one of the island's many art studios; or simply spend your time on the beach. Waiheke Island is the place where you can enjoy what's important to you.
